Sister body of CFI at IIT Madras. Three clubs. One mission: build things that matter for East Africa and the world.
CIE — the Centre of Innovation & Entrepreneurship at IIT Madras Zanzibar — is the sister body of CFI (Centre for Innovation) at IIT Madras, one of Asia's largest student-run technical innovation hubs with over 15 years of legacy.
We are a student-led innovation hub dedicated to problem-solving, design thinking, and venture creation. Through our three clubs — CIPHER (tech), iBot (robotics), and Sahaay (social impact) — we empower students to transform ideas into products that matter.
Guided by the same principles that built CFI — hands-on making, real-world validation, and peer-driven mentorship — CIE brings that spirit of innovation to the shores of Zanzibar, addressing real challenges in East Africa and beyond.
We believe the best way to learn is to build under pressure, with purpose, in public. Every project at CIE is stress-tested, reviewed by CFI heads and IITMZ faculty, and held to a measurable standard of impact.
We believe in making things — real, working products. Not decks. Not theories. Functioning prototypes that can be tested, used, and shipped.
Every idea is tested against reality. We stress-test assumptions with real users, real data, and honest feedback before calling anything done.
The end goal is impact at scale. We push student teams to think beyond the campus — toward products and ventures that create lasting change.
With the founding of IIT Madras Zanzibar, a group of students and faculty envisioned a space where innovation could thrive. Inspired by CFI's 15-year legacy, CIE was established as the student innovation body of IITMZ — bringing structure, mentorship, and ambition to student ideas from day one.
Three foundational clubs were established: CIPHER for technology and AI, iBot for robotics and hardware, and Sahaay for social impact. Over 40 students signed on as the first cohort of CIE innovators — representing engineers, designers, and changemakers from across the globe.
The first formal project evaluation was launched, with teams presenting to a panel including CFI heads from IIT Madras and IITMZ faculty. The SMART rubric — Goal Statement, Background, Deliverables, Timeline, Validation — became the standard for every project at CIE.
Fifteen teams selected. Projects span AI agents, wildlife conservation, healthcare delivery, smart robotics, and economic tools for East African SMEs — all built by students, for real-world impact on the African continent and beyond.
CIE was born from a simple belief: that the best students in East Africa deserve the same opportunities to build, fail, and grow as the best students anywhere in the world.
The culture of CFI — where students build satellites, race cars, and social enterprises with full institutional backing — is the culture we carry to Zanzibar. CIE is not a copy. It is a continuation.
What started as a handful of students in a room with an idea has grown into a structured innovation pipeline that takes projects from concept to working product in a single semester.
CIE is not just a club — it is a culture. A culture of building, of failing forward, of creating solutions that matter. Every student who walks through our doors carries the potential to change the world.
